Why do humans cry emotional tears?

All land vertebrates make tears; eyes need washing. But only humans, as far as careful observation can tell, produce tears from feeling: grief, joy, awe, the last minutes of certain films. Darwin studied weeping in his 1872 book on emotional expression and concluded, uncharacteristically, that the tears themselves were purposeless, an incidental side effect of screwed-up eye muscles. That shrug has not survived, but nothing has firmly replaced it. The signature human secretion has no agreed function.
Why it matters
Crying sits at the center of human social life: it appears in infancy before language, persists across every culture, and reliably reorganizes the behavior of everyone in the room. If tears are a signal, they are among the most powerful signals humans send, and we do not know what precisely they transmit or why the channel is liquid. There is a clinical stake too. Crying varies enormously between people and changes with depression, in both directions, and some patients on certain antidepressants report being unable to cry at all. A real account of tears would illuminate the machinery of emotion itself.
What has been tried
Three families of explanation compete. The signaling account holds that tears are an honest, hard-to-fake broadcast of helplessness or need: they blur the crier’s own vision and visibly handicap them, which makes the display credible, and studies find that faces with tears digitally removed read as ambiguous while the same faces with tears summon immediate sympathy. The chemical account proposes tears carry chemosignals; one prominent experiment reported that smelling women’s emotional tears lowered testosterone and arousal in men, a result that drew wide attention and, later, questions about replication. The excretion account, popular in the 1980s, held that emotional tears flush stress hormones from the body; emotional tears do differ chemically from irritant tears, but the quantities are too small for plausible detox, and the idea has faded. Comparative work adds a puzzle rather than an answer: no other animal, including other apes, has been convincingly shown to weep from emotion.
Where the edge is
The signaling story leads but rests heavily on how observers react to tears, which shows what tears do without settling what they evolved for. Why the signal is tears rather than any other display, why it is unique to one species, and what infants' cries share with adults' silent weeping remain open.
