Why do cats purr?

A purring cat seems like a solved problem: the cat is happy, the cat vibrates, everyone involved is satisfied with the arrangement. Then the details arrive. Cats also purr when injured, frightened, giving birth, and dying. The sound is produced continuously through both inhale and exhale, unlike almost any other vocalization. And until recently, science could not fully explain how a small larynx sustains a steady rumble at frequencies that should require a much larger animal. The commonest sound a human ever hears from another species is not understood.

Why it matters

Honestly, no grant depends on this. It is in the catalog because it is a perfect specimen of nearby ignorance: a phenomenon observed daily by hundreds of millions of people, assumed solved by nearly all of them, and open at both of science’s classic levels, mechanism and function. It also touches a real scientific nerve. Vocal communication between species that live together, and what a signal is for when it appears in contexts as opposite as contentment and dying, are live questions in animal behavior, and the purr is their most familiar test case.

What has been tried

On mechanism, the textbook account held that purring is active: the brain drives the vocal folds to twitch rhythmically, twenty-five to a hundred and fifty times per second, chopping airflow into a rumble. Recent laboratory work complicated this, showing that excised cat larynges can produce purring-like oscillation passively, with no muscle twitching at all, thanks to pads of tissue embedded in the vocal folds that let a small larynx behave acoustically like a bigger one. Whether living cats purr actively, passively, or both is now genuinely contested. On function, hypotheses abound: contentment signaling, mother-kitten communication in the nest, a self-soothing behavior, and the striking proposal that purr frequencies overlap the range shown to stimulate bone and tissue healing, making the purr a self-repair device. Cats also deploy a solicitation purr with an embedded high-frequency cry that humans find hard to ignore, evidence the purr can be tuned to manipulate us.

Where the edge is

The mechanism question has moved fast and may resolve soon; the function question has barely moved. Why purring appears in both comfort and crisis, whether the healing hypothesis survives a direct test, and what the purr costs remain open.

What would count as an answer

The mechanism settled in living cats, and at least one functional hypothesis confirmed or killed by experiment: measured healing effects, or mapped social outcomes. The cat, characteristically, is not telling.
