Where do European eels spawn?

Every European eel in every river, from Norway to North Africa, was born somewhere in the open Atlantic. That much is certain. What no one has ever done, in the wild, is see it happen. No fertilized egg has been found, no spawning adult caught in the act. Aristotle, defeated by the missing eggs, concluded eels arose spontaneously from the earth. The eggs are still missing.

Why it matters

The European eel is critically endangered; the number of young eels reaching the coast each year has fallen by around ninety percent since the 1970s. You cannot protect a nursery you cannot find, and the presumed one lies in international waters with no binding protection. There is a practical edge too: eel farming cannot close the species' life cycle, so every farmed European eel begins as a wild-caught baby, which feeds a black market worth on the order of a billion euros a year. And there is the plain wonder of it: a common animal, eaten for millennia, whose reproduction has out-hidden every naturalist since antiquity.

What has been tried

It took until 1777 to find an eel ovary and until 1896 to prove that a transparent, leaf-shaped ocean fish was actually the eel’s larva. The Danish biologist Johannes Schmidt then spent nearly twenty years trawling the Atlantic for ever-smaller larvae, and in the early 1920s the trail of shrinking sizes led him to the Sargasso Sea. That inference has held for a century: modern surveys, with genetic identification, find the smallest larvae strung across two thousand kilometres of the southern Sargasso, near the same ocean fronts. In 2022, satellite tags finally tracked migrating adults from the Azores all the way into the Sargasso, the first direct evidence that they arrive. Survey ships still go out looking.

Where the edge is

Arrival is not spawning. The exact sites, depths, season, and behavior remain unobserved, and the slow tracked swimming speeds raise the possibility that eels arrive more than a year after leaving the coast. How a fish navigates several thousand kilometres to an unmarked patch of open ocean is its own open question; young eels carry a magnetic sense, but what guides the adults is hypothesis. A dissenting proposal placing spawning nearer the Mid-Atlantic Ridge found no support in the larval data.

What would count as an answer

An egg, honestly. A fertilized European eel egg collected at sea, or spawning adults observed or sampled in the act, fixing the place and depth at last. Schmidt’s map, finished.
