Fifty thousand years ago, Earth ran a full stable of giants: mammoths and woolly rhinos across the north, ground sloths the size of elephants and armored glyptodonts in the Americas, three-ton wombat relatives in Australia, sabertooth cats stalking all of it. By ten thousand years ago, nearly all were gone. Around half the world’s large mammal species vanished in a window that is, geologically, a blink. Cuvier proved from mammoth bones in 1796 that extinction was real; the cause of this particular extinction has been fought over ever since.

Why it matters

This is a whodunit about the world we inherited. Grasslands, forests, and their surviving animals were reshaped by the giants' removal, so the mystery is also the origin story of modern ecosystems, with practical stakes for rewilding debates. And one suspect is us. Whether small bands of humans with stone-tipped spears could erase whole faunas bears directly on how old the human capacity for ecological transformation is, and the verdict shadows every conversation about our species' present impact.

What has been tried

The human case, argued forcefully as overkill since the 1960s, rests on timing and pattern: extinctions track human arrival, not climate, across wildly different environments. Australia’s giants went around the time people arrived, during no exceptional climate event; the Americas lost their megafauna within roughly two thousand years of widespread human presence; and islands from Madagascar to New Zealand lost their giants only when people landed, millennia after continental climates had settled. Africa and southern Asia, where animals evolved alongside hominins for two million years, kept most of their giants. The climate case counters with the violent temperature swings ending the last ice age, and ancient DNA shows some populations, woolly rhinos among them, declining before humans plausibly reached them, while habitat modeling shows ranges collapsing on their own. More exotic culprits, a hyperdisease or a comet impact, have found little purchase. The emerging synthesis is unheroic for both sides: climate stressed and fragmented populations, and human hunting, even at modest rates, removed the survivors of slow-breeding species that could not replace losses.

Where the edge is

The mix remains unquantified and varies by continent, with Australia’s chronology and the Americas' exact human arrival date both actively contested. Ancient DNA and better dating are converting the argument from rhetoric to measurement, continent by continent.

What would count as an answer

Population trajectories, from ancient DNA and dated remains, resolved finely enough to assign each major extinction its cause in proportion: how much climate, how much us.
