What is consciousness, physically?

You are having an experience right now: these words, the light in the room, the feel of attention itself. That experience is produced by, or is, the activity of a physical object, about three pounds of tissue running on roughly twenty watts. Between those two sentences lies the largest open question we know how to state. Nothing in physics, chemistry, or biology yet explains why any arrangement of matter has an inside.

Why it matters

Everything observed, argued, or valued passes through consciousness; it is the medium every other question in this catalog arrives in. It is also becoming practical. Medicine needs to know whether an unresponsive patient is experiencing anything, and detection is only as good as our theory. Anesthesiology switches consciousness off millions of times a year without knowing what it is switching. And machines now converse fluently, which makes the question of what does and does not have experience newly urgent, with nothing like a settled test.

What has been tried

The modern strategy is to hunt for the neural correlates of consciousness: the minimal brain activity that accompanies an experience, isolated by contrasting seen versus unseen stimuli, sleep versus waking, anesthesia versus recovery. That program has real results, implicating thalamocortical loops and a posterior cortical zone rather than, say, the cerebellum, which has more neurons than the rest of the brain and contributes no experience. On top of the data sit competing theories. Global workspace theory says consciousness is information broadcast widely across the brain for flexible use. Integrated information theory says it is what highly integrated causal structure feels like from inside. Higher-order and predictive-processing accounts offer other stories. A rare adversarial collaboration recently tested the first two head to head; the results challenged predictions of both and crowned neither.

Where the edge is

Correlates are not explanation. Even a perfect map of which activity accompanies experience leaves what philosophers call the hard problem: why there is something it is like to be that activity at all. Some researchers expect the hard problem to dissolve the way the mystery of life dissolved into biochemistry. Others argue it is a different kind of problem entirely. That disagreement, about what would even count as progress, is itself part of the open question.

What would count as an answer

A theory that predicts, from physical structure alone, whether a system is conscious and of what, tested against every case we can check: patients, infants, animals, split brains, machines. Consciousness science is nowhere near this. It is, at last, honestly trying.
