One day in 1950, over lunch at Los Alamos, Enrico Fermi listened to his colleagues chat about flying saucers and interstellar travel, went quiet, and then asked a question that has never been satisfactorily answered: where is everybody? The galaxy is billions of years older than we are. Even slow starships could cross it in a few million years. If technological civilizations are at all common, someone should have been here long before us, and the sky should not be this quiet.
Why it matters
This is the rare cosmic question with a personal stake: it is about whether we have company, and every candidate answer says something enormous. If life is common but intelligence is rare, we are a fluke. If civilizations arise often but die young, that is actuarial news about our own future. If we are genuinely alone, then everything the universe will ever understand about itself currently lives on one planet. The question quietly disciplines biology, astronomy, and our self-regard all at once.
What has been tried
The modern search began in 1960, when Frank Drake pointed a radio telescope at two nearby stars, and his 1961 equation organized the problem into factors, most of which were then pure guesswork. Two of those factors have since been measured: we now know most stars have planets, and rocky worlds at comfortable distances from their stars are common. Radio and optical searches have grown vastly more capable and found no confirmed signal. The explanatory literature has grown faster than the evidence: perhaps some step from chemistry to starfaring civilization is almost impossibly hard, a Great Filter either behind us or ahead of us; perhaps civilizations stay home, stay quiet, or simply do not last; perhaps we are early; perhaps we would not recognize the evidence if it were in front of us.
Where the edge is
The honest state is an absence, not a mystery object. We have searched a tiny fraction of the plausible signal space, so the silence constrains loud, nearby, persistent broadcasters and little else. The nearest-term movement is likely to come from a different direction entirely: atmospheric chemistry on planets around other stars, where signs of even microbial life would remove one factor from the equation.
What would count as an answer
Contact, or an artifact, settles it one way. The other direction closes slowly: finding that simple life is common while the sky stays silent would locate the filter, and locating it is the real question hiding inside Fermi’s.
