Why do we dream?

Every human being spends roughly two hours a night hallucinating: full scenes, other people, strong emotion, occasionally flight. Then the hallucinations are mostly erased by morning. This has been happening to everyone, every night, for the entire history of the species, and it is still not settled what dreaming does, or whether it does anything at all.

Why it matters

Dreaming is consciousness running with the doors closed: perception without input, narrative without an author, emotion without an event. Explain why the brain stages this performance and you learn something deep about what brains are doing the rest of the time. There is a clinical stake too. Nightmares are a core symptom of post-traumatic stress, dream disturbances track with Parkinson’s disease years before diagnosis, and depriving people of REM sleep has measurable effects on mood and memory. A real theory of dreaming would tell us what these disruptions are disrupting.

What has been tried

The scientific era opened in 1953, when Aserinsky and Kleitman discovered REM sleep and found dreaming concentrated there, though later work showed dreams occur in non-REM sleep as well. Freud’s wish-fulfillment theory came first and failed as science; it forbids nothing, so it predicts nothing. Hobson and McCarley’s activation-synthesis model recast dreams as the cortex improvising a story from brainstem noise. Since then the serious candidates have multiplied: dreams as memory consolidation, replaying the day’s experience into long-term storage; dreams as threat rehearsal, a nightly simulator for dangerous situations; dreams as emotional regulation, stripping the charge off difficult memories; even dreams as a defense against overfitting, feeding the brain strange data so it generalizes better. Each theory has supporting evidence. None has a decisive experiment.

Where the edge is

The sharpest open split is whether dreams themselves do the work or merely report it. Sleep clearly serves memory and emotion; whether the experienced dream is the mechanism or just the exhaust of the mechanism is unresolved. Researchers can now communicate with lucid dreamers in real time, receiving signaled answers from inside REM sleep, and can decode coarse dream imagery from brain scans. The tools are finally arriving. The theory has not.

What would count as an answer

A demonstrated function: some capacity that degrades when dreaming specifically is prevented, with sleep otherwise intact, and recovers when dreaming returns. Or the clean negative result, showing dreams are a byproduct with no function at all. Either would close the entry. Neither is in hand.
