Four billion years ago the Earth was rock, water, and weather. Within a few hundred million years, something on it was eating, copying itself, and evolving. Every living thing since, every whale and bacterium and reader of this sentence, descends from that transition. It happened at least once. We cannot yet say how, and we have not been able to make it happen again.
Why it matters
This is the origin story of everything biology studies, and its answer sets the odds for the rest of the universe. If the step from chemistry to life is easy, the cosmos should be full of it and we should find second examples, perhaps in our own solar system. If it required a nearly impossible accident, we may be alone in a very large room. There are few questions where the answer changes the meaning of the night sky.
What has been tried
In 1953 Stanley Miller sparked a flask of gases meant to imitate the early atmosphere and got amino acids in a week, and the field has felt tantalizingly close ever since. The leading framework is the RNA world: RNA can both store information like DNA and catalyze reactions like a protein, so a single molecule could have run the first cells. Supporting it, the ribosome’s catalytic heart is made of RNA, a possible fossil of that era. Chemists have shown that RNA’s building blocks can form under plausibly prebiotic conditions, a result long thought out of reach. A rival school starts with metabolism instead: alkaline hydrothermal vents on the seafloor offer natural energy gradients uncannily like the ones all modern cells still use. Others have built simple protocells, fatty membranes that grow and divide.
Where the edge is
Each camp can make its own piece. Nobody has crossed the gap that matters: a chemical system, from realistic early-Earth ingredients, that copies itself with variation and starts to evolve. Self-replication has been demonstrated only with heavy laboratory assistance. The steps exist in separate flasks; the flask where they happen together, unassisted, does not yet exist.
What would count as an answer
Two routes. Build it: demonstrate the full transition in a laboratory under conditions the early Earth actually offered. Or find it: a second, independent origin of life, on Mars or in the oceans of Enceladus or Europa, which would prove the transition is a habit of the universe rather than a miracle of one planet.
